The CSSE Edmonton Education Committee is pleased to present a one-day workshop on incident investigation and root cause analysis. The workshop will be at the Chateau Lois, On October 22, 2019. The workshop will focus on investigation process and tips with a case study scenarios, as well as perspectives from Industry Experts, an OHS investigator, and an OHS lawyer. A continental breakfast will begin at 7:30, and the workshop will begin at 8:00.

Industry Subject Matter Experts:

Ken Newby

Ken Newby, B.A., CSP, CRSP, ARM, CRM, is the Senior Safety Advisor and Key Account Holder at SafeTech Consulting, a Division of Young EnergyServe Inc. in Edmonton, Alberta.

Ken graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelors of Arts in Business Administration with an option in Finance.

Ken was first assigned safety duties in 1991 while working in Hawaii for a mid-sized precast company. He has since performed safety management for residential housing, sewer and water infrastructure, high-rise construction, worker’s compensation insurance safety for high risk accounts, CenturyLink sports stadium in Seattle, airport security upgrades, and industrial and power-plant construction, upgrades and shut-downs.

Ken attained four safety designations while being an active member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASE) since 1995, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) since 2003.

Ken has taught courses in the Occupational Health and Safety Program at the University of Alberta, and is currently the co-Chair for the Advisory Committee for Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s Occupational Health and Safety Diploma Program.

Leah Jussila

Leah Jussila, BA, CRSP is the senior safety advisor and interim operations manager at SafeTech Consulting, a Division of Young EnergyServe Inc., in Edmonton, Alberta.

Leah graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with an option in economics.

Leah’s first safety duties were with a high voltage electrical company who used to clean the power lines using helicopters in 2008. Since then, she has gone on to be a safety advisor for several large oil and gas companies. She was also responsible for creating, implementing and maintaining a safety system that was adopted globally. That program is still used today. She has also completed numerous program development builds ranging from small family companies to global empires. Her passion is contractor management and analysis of safety metrics including leading and lagging indicators. She loves predicting where the next unsafe observation is going to take place.

She obtained her CRSP in 2013. Has been an active member of the CSSE since 2013 and recently joined the ASSP.

Daniel Deck

Daniel Deck is the corporate Vice President of Operations with the Young Group of Companies, providing safety, health, environment and operational guidance to operations in Canada and the United States.
With over 20 years of management background, in various industries, Dan joined Young EnergyServe in 2006 as HSE advisor and has established himself as a knowledgeable dedicated professional, developing an industry leading confined space program, developing processes and procedures that embrace a broad assortment of equipment, personnel and operational considerations to deliver exceptional service to the oil and gas industry while ensuring the safety and health of all workers.
Daniel has extensive experience with in the oil and gas industry, having been involved with construction, turnaround planning, equipment cleaning, inspection and repairs for more than a decade in Canada.

OHS Incident Investigator:
Michael Waldner

Michael Waldner has been a Lead Investigator with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety for the past four years. Originally from Brandon, MB, he attend Brandon University from 1996 – 2000, obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Chemistry with a Math minor. From 2004 to present, he has held the positions of Safety Specialist and Associate Manager Environmental Health and Safety with Gilead Alberta, Safety Manager Pipelines & Conex Canada with AECOM, and Acting Manager of the OHS Investigations team based in Edmonton. Michael has been an army reservist since 1996, currently holding the rank of Major and position of Second-in-Command of 20 Field Artillery Regiment headquartered in Edmonton, AB. During his time with the Canadian Forces he has deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Afghanistan.

Occupational Health and Safety Lawyer Lawyer:
Christopher Spasoff

Christopher Spasoff is one of only a handful of lawyers with experience on both sides of the OH&S regulatory regime, having spent time as both an OH&S Crown Prosecutor and OH&S Defence Lawyer.

Often sought out for his practical, easy-to-understand advice and common sense approach to problem solving, Christopher left the Crown in May 2014 to establish F2 Legal Counsel, the first and only law firm in Alberta exclusively dedicated to the practice of occupational health and safety law. As an advisor to both employers and workers on a variety of OHS issues including stop work orders, workplace investigations, and the defence of OHS charges, Christopher is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience whenever possible.
