Topic: Detox with Control Banding and GHS

Speaker: Mike Phibbs – President of Chemscape Safety Technologies Inc.

Session outline:

Control Banding and Globally Harmonized System (GHS) combined can help a safety practitioner put health in their safety program. With 10% of cancers originating from workplace exposures and WCB data identifying greater mortality rates from occupational illness than workplace incidents and motor vehicle incidents the focus will come upon exposure prevention.

US OSHA Deputy Secretary has indicated their process to set exposure limits is broken. In addition, Canada has 22,000 chemical substances in commerce and only 800 Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL).

Occupational exposure and control banding are identified as an alternative method to OELs. In other words, protection is provided from all chemicals, not just those with OELs.

Chemical Control Banding is an internationally recognized assessment process that uses defined input categories and actionable risk outputs

This session will teach attendees how to use GHS and inputs already available to hazard rank their chemicals. You will learn to use hazard ranking to suggest less toxic substitutes then use Control Banding to predict engineering controls. Elements of GHS classification are explained and demonstrated with how images can be assigned to control hazards and risks.

Attendees as a result of the information provided will:
  • Become familiar with control banding principals
  • Objectively hazard rank chemicals using Hazard Statements from SDSs and Supplier Labels, to categorize chemical hazards.
  • Detox your sites with objective hazard ranks and product use, to suggest less toxic substitutions.
  • Communicate with many icons to cross language barriers
  • Predict risk control approaches including natural ventilation, extraction ventilation, containment or seek expert advice.
