Job Summary:

The Manager Corporate Health, Safety and Wellness is responsible for planning, managing and coordinating the delivery of the organizational health, safety and wellness programs for the WSIB, ensuring organizational compliance with Provincial Legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Workplace Safety Insurance Act and all relevant Health and Safety Procedures, Guidelines and Standards.

Provide technical expertise, consultation and leadership to management and staff on WSIB’s Corporate Health, Safety and Wellness programs and services. Develop and maintain effective relations internally with WSIB management to promote and raise awareness in Health, Safety and Wellness; discuss/exchange information of mutual interest, identify and respond to emerging issues as appropriate.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  1. Plan, manage and control the Corporate Health, Safety & Wellness programs, services, policies and processes within the WSIB, which includes annual planning of projects and priorities, identifying resource requirements, allocating work, recruiting, establishing performance objectives, conducting performance reviews, and providing training, guidance and feedback to staff, contractors and other resources. Manage Annual branch initiatives and activities include but not limited to:
    • Health, Safety and Wellness program(s) development and maintenance;
    • Health, Safety and Wellness audits and risk assessments including subsequent correction actions, and internal financial audits;
    • Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) and Psychological Health and Safety Management System (PHSMS) development and maintenance;
    • Vendor procurements and relationship management;
    • Handling Health, Safety and Wellness related issues/escalations
  2. Provide expert knowledge, consultation and advice to management, staff, and the workplace joint occupational health and safety committees (JOHSC) to protect the health, safety and well-being of staff. This includes assisting management in recognizing, understanding, assessing and controlling health and safety issues.
  3. Provide regular Health, Safety and Wellness program status updates to WSIB senior management, Occupational Health and Safety Committees, OCEU-CUPE1750 Executive Board
  4. Lead and/or participate in the design, development and promotion of high-quality Health, Safety and Wellness programs and services, committee work, special events, and activities to educate and inform staff about the WSIB’s Occupational Health & Safety and Healthy Workplace Centre programs and initiatives, This includes:
    • Lead the re-engineering and continuous improvement of work flows, methods and processes for the administration of the Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) and Psychological Health and Safety Management System (PHSMS)
    • Supports the co-ordination and administration of the Central and Local JOHSC, which will include being a resource for the committees as the organization’s management representative.
    • Manage accountabilities of the H&S senior representatives for each floor, including floor inspections, etc.
    • Lead the promotion of and planning of NAOSH Week, Healthy Workplace Month, Mental Health Awareness Week, RSI Awareness Day etc.
    • Develop, implement and maintain relevant H&S Training, conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and incident/injury prevention
    • Investigate occupational incidents and accidents to discover causes, report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics.
  5. Manage and oversee Health, Safety and Wellness programs’ evaluation. This includes:
    • Develop, implement, evaluate and monitor program evaluation and measurement plans for health, safety and wellness initiatives
    • Develop tools and processes to measure and monitor health, safety and wellness initiatives to ensure targets are met and/or continuous improvement and program effectiveness
    • Interpret, manage and analyse evaluation results to provide conclusions and recommendations to Director HWC and HR management team for improvements and changes to administration of programs and divisional work plans
  6. Act as the health and safety lead in liaison with Facilities & Real Estate Management on any related facilities matters e.g. Workstation Ergonomics, odours (scent sensitivities) , water leaks, HVAC and lighting issues etc.
  7. Ensure that the organization is in full compliance with the requirements under Regulation 1101 of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and any other legislative requirements for workplace health and safety. This includes oversight of the Simcoe Place First Aid Clinic
  8. Assist in the oversight and facilitation of the WSIB ‘Peer Support’ Program
  9. Represent the interests of the WSIB employer in any Ministry of Labour investigations or site visits
  10. Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned or required

Job Requirements:

  1. Education (Level and Specialty / Discipline):
    • Post-secondary in a related field
      • Preferred: Occupational health, safety, and industrial hygiene theories, principles and techniques demonstrated through certification (Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) with five to seven years of related experience to provide expertise and guidance on occupational health and safety issues including conducting assessments and making appropriate recommendations
  2. Experience (Years of Related Experience and Type of Experience):
    • 5+years in an occupational health and safety role with a mid to large-size organization.
  3. Technical or Professional Qualifications or Certifications/Designations:
    • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
      • Project Management Professional (PMP) as asset
