Job Details

The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for providing corporate health & safety oversight and leadership to all departments and divisions within the City of Peterborough and providing timely and effective consultative advice and direction in all matters of occupational health and safety with the goal of preventing injuries and illness to employees, contractors and the general public as well as preventing possible damage to city owned equipment and facilities.  This includes responsibility for the identification, assessment and control recommendations of corporate health and safety risks; leading the continual assessment of the City of Peterborough’s Health and Safety Management System and associated legislative compliance through the use of audits, inspections, industrial hygiene sampling, drills, documentation reviews and other hazard and compliance assessment methods; monitoring, reviewing and interpreting health and safety documentation and statistical data to identify current system gaps, positive and negative health and safety and costing trends; and leading the development of effective control strategies and solutions to eliminate identified system gaps, improve on deficiencies and capitalize on potential improvement opportunities.

Qualifications

We require an individual who has a minimum Community College Diploma and/or University Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Requires a minimum of 5 years related experience including:  developing and coordinating health and safety programs; conducting accident investigations; health and safety responsibilities in an industrial or construction industry environment; developing and delivering formal health and safety training.  Must possess demonstrated knowledge of and experience interpreting and working with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Employment Standards Act, the Labour Relations Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Building Code, and the Fire Code.  Requires demonstrated awareness of current and emerging occupation health issues including hazard identification and risk assessment, ergonomic design, protective equipment and clothing, confined space entry, working at heights, energy control, hearing conservation, and constructor safety.  CRSP or CHSC designation is required for this position.

The incumbent must possess: excellent analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills including knowledge of effective workplace safety audit techniques; advanced communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to effectively influence and secure the cooperation of others; good public and employee relations skills; the ability to support and facilitate positive work relationships and deal with contentious situations and issues; excellent presentation and facilitation skills; demonstrated knowledge of adult learning techniques and principles including the ability to develop effective training programs; the ability to work with minimum direction and self-manage competing priorities and workload.  Must have a good working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software applications.  Previous experience working in a union environment is preferred.  Must have a valid driver’s license and provide own transportation to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Salary

$84,131 - $91,960
