Manager, Global Health & Safety

This is a tremendous opportunity for a deeply experienced Health & Safety leader to make a significant contribution to our organizational safety culture through employee engagement, ownership and accountability and behaviour-based safety efforts. 

Reporting to the SVP, Operations and Ingredient Management, the Manager, Global Health & Safety will drive our health and safety program across Canada, the USA and wherever Champion maintains a business entity, supporting continuous improvement company-wide.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new and innovative programs to motivate the workforce to participate and engage in Health & Safety

  • Ensure strategies/programs are implemented at a global level

  • Address new developments in the health and safety regulatory environment and industry best practices globally

  • Provide leadership and direction to ensure the successful delivery, implementation and administration of corporate Health & Safety policies, processes and systems

  • Provide training, support and mentoring to Site H&S Advisors and/or Coordinators

  • Provide a central point of reference for other team leaders/managers/directors for Health & Safety matters, referring and consulting the appropriate subject matter expert(s) when required to ensure the highest standards of service and support at all sites

  • Conduct safety and incident reviews with Site-Led Health & Safety teams to address recent incidents, root causes, corrective actions and mechanisms for cross-sharing learning experiences

  • Develop new and update Corporate Standards 

  • Conduct audits to help close critical gaps in performance to standards

  • Develop strategies and programs to create awareness of safety concerns, hazards, and conditions and methods for practicing safe work activities

  • Provide mentoring and safety knowledge development for site-led health & safety employees

  • Support investigation and/or assessment of any serious incidents and ensure protocols are in place to mitigate against recurrence

  • Act as an advocate for health and safety best practices within Champion, promoting awareness through the successful delivery of education, training, and development programs

  • Advocate for corporate health and safety initiatives on an executive level

  • Lead the KPI process and budget, including action plans as needed to address concern 

  • Manage relationships with Federal, Provincial and State occupational health and safety regulatory bodies

  • Liaise with the Community and Regulatory organizations on behalf of Champion, represent the organization on various Industry and Stakeholder Committees and support the advancement of collective initiatives

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in related to Health & Safety.

  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CHSC (Certified Health & Safety Consultant) designation would be preferred.

  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in a safety position, or equivalent combination of education and experience, including a minimum of 5 years’ experience managing projects and people.

  • Experience developing and implementing Behavioral Based Safety programs. 

  • Knowledge of manufacturing practices and processes, preferably in the food industry.

  • Experience in research, analysis, interpretation and implementation of safety regulations, standards, and best practices.

  • Expert knowledge of the concepts and best practices of occupational health and safety.

  • Understand and have complete knowledge of all Federal, Provincial rules and regulations pertaining to safety codes and Occupational Health and Safety rules.

  • Able to conceptually work through high impact, abstract, and undefined problems, using root cause analysis and a focus on organizational goals and strategy.

  • Strong conceptual, critical thinking and design skills as applied to policies, programs, and processes.

  • Excellent communication skills to enable collaboration with all levels of the organization, and the ability to synthesize technical material into easily understood language.

  • Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders and authorities in the context of a critical incident or traumatic event, as well as investigations.

  • Proficiency in presentation and communications technology, such as Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • Ability to present outcomes and recommendations to business leaders in a concise manner.

  • Capable of overseeing multiple projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to train, coach, evaluate, and improve others.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Self-directed, highly motivated, detail oriented, and able to provide strong leadership to cultivate a strong team environment.

  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills. 

  • Travel between multiple facilities is required.
