Executive Director

The Nova Scotia Trucking Safety Association (NSTSA) is a not for profit, member funded workplace health and safety association with a commitment to saving lives and reducing the toll of workplace injuries by the coordination of quality health and safety programs through training, certification and partnerships. The NSTSA is a leader in safety excellence, and through collaboration with industry partners, they are making the Nova Scotia trucking industry a safer place to work.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Chair of the Board, The Executive Director is responsible for the association's overall strategic direction and operational performance. Working with the Board, they will establish and execute on the long-term strategic direction of the association and assist in formulating the vision and goals to ensure alignment. In collaboration with business partners, key stakeholders and members they will ensure the programs and services offered are relevant to the trucking industry and meet the priorities of the association. They will recommend the development of new policies, programs and initiatives in response to identified needs and trends relevant to workplace health and safety. As a WCB Safety Certified Approved Audit Provider, the Executive Director must ensure the NSTSA continues to meet this standard and maintain ISO certification annually (ISO 9001:2015).

Managing an internal team of two (2) and a small group of subcontractors responsible for completing audits, the Executive Director will provide strong advice and leadership to staff and subcontractors ensuring the team is motivated to reach the goals of the association. They will be responsible for the human resources function and financial management of the association, ensuring a strong financial model is developed to guarantee long-term sustainability. A natural relationship builder and strong communicator, they will establish and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, including, members, government representatives, WCB, and industry partners. A true advocate for the industry, they will increase and build member participation by promoting awareness of the association to deliver on the vision of being leaders of health and safety. The Executive Director has the unique opportunity to make a significant impact by fostering a culture of health and safety and implementing goals to reduce work-place injuries and illnesses in the trucking industry.

Qualifications:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma from an accredited institution considered an asset
  • At least 5 years of experience in a senior management role
  • Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) or Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or other professional health and safety designation
  • Experience working in or a strong understanding of the trucking industry
  • Hold a current Occupational Health & Safety Systems Auditor course certificate
  • Knowledge of Provincial and Federal Occupational Health & Safety legislations
  • Experience working in the non-for-profit sector considered an asset
  • Experience reporting to or being a member of a Board of Directors
  • Experience developing and implementing long-term strategic plans
  • Collaborative leader with proven ability to effectively lead, coach and develop team
  • Ability to balance long-term objectives and activities with day-to-day operations and pressures
  • Proven experience in financial management
  • Strong communication, relationship building, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a technologically focused environment
